Seatbelts decrease the risk of being killed or seriously injured in a crash by around 40 per cent.
Each year around 500 lives are saved in NSW because people have used occupant restraints. Overall NSW has one of the highest levels of occupant restraint use in the world.
As a group, male adults (particularly in rural areas) have lower seatbelt wearing rates than the general population. As a result they’re over-represented in unrestrained fatalities.
