Speeding. It's hard to impress a dead mate

Paul Ashley

I was born with Spina Bifida and have spent my whole life in a wheelchair. My sporting career has spanned over 10 years in Track & Road, Swimming and Basketball.

I have represented NSW a total of 5 times at the Junior National Wheelchair Championships and Australia once. I have held National records in the 100m, 200m, 400m,800m, 1500m, 5000m, 4x100m & 4x400m (Track) and the 200m Backstroke (Swimming). For the past 3 years I have been selected in the Australian U/20 squad and at the 2006 Junior National Wheelchair Basketball Championships I was selected into the Australian All-Star team. I currently play for the West Sydney Razorbacks in the National Wheelchair Basketball League.

This year I completed my Diploma in Sport & Recreation at TAFE and am looking forward to my future career prospects in sport, particularly, in disabled sports.

Outside of wheelchair sport my interests include watching Rugby League & Basketball, Playstation, going to the movies and camping.

What Arrive alive means to me
Being a MAA Arrive Alive Roadshow Presenter is great as it gives me the opportunity to speak to/ with students. I can help them understand what life is like in a wheelchair and about making the right decisions in life, whether it is an individual decision or a decision that is made among a group of mates. Like most people my age, I enjoy adventure and a bit of rough and tumble; however I have always been very deliberate with my decisions. I hope that I can influence others, with my experiences as a person with a disability and an athlete with a disability.
