Day Two - 21 September, 2007

Top seeds firing as finals showdown looms in great waves at Manly!

Increasing swells made for good waves and with the pressure to perform in the second last event of the Australasia Pro Junior season for 2007, it was the top seeded surfers who stood out on day two of the Aloha Hornet Pro Junior at Manly Beach.

Sunshine Coast surfer Mitch Coleborn edged one step closer to securing ASP Australasian Seasons ratings by opening the day with a comprehensive win which saw highly rated visitors David Delroy Carr (Perth) and New Zealand's Ryan Hawker both eliminated from the event.

Coleborn is not only chasing the series title, he's also a big chance to take an unprecedented five victories on the Pro Junior circuit in one season, a feat many believe would stand for a long time should he be able win one more.

"The waves were fun and really all I can do is take each heat as it comes. There's too many things to concentrate on if I think about ratings and number of wins. I like to win every time so I simply stick to that plan," a relaxed Coleborn said after his win.

While the number one seed did it with ease, number two seed Heath Joske (Coffs Harbour) struggled in a big way and was very fortunate to scrape through into 2nd place behind local star David Vlug to advance to round three.
Relieved to make it through after the heat, Joske commented on his form "That was a shocker for me, I couldn't find any rhythm out there and like last week I was very nearly eliminated in my opening heat. With ratings so tight it's important for me to do well, stay inside the top four and qualify for the ASP World Junior Championships."

"To get over that heat is good - get it out of the way and find my form as I go into round three - we all have the odd shocker so hopefully that's it for me and I'll get better."

Local surfer Nick Riley (Queenscliff) had no problems finding waves and nor should he with the event running at his home beach. He won his round two heat and will be keen to go a lot further following his win over Queensland's Brett Livingston. Coming into the event in 13th position on the ratings, Riley needs a big result if he is to challenge for a top four ratings position and qualify for the ASP World Juniors.

"I know I have to do well here and it's a good opportunity in familiar waters, staying at home instead of travelling and sleeping in different beds has to be an advantage so hopefully it works for me. It's looking good for the weekend so I'm looking forward to going a lot further here."

Some of yesterday's standout young performers shone again, although not all!

North Narrabeen's David Vlug and Davey Cathels are both through to round three. Not so fortunate was Garret Parkes, Todd Rosewall and Tom Myers - all eliminated from the event.

Other top performers to progress included Owen Wright (Culburra/South Coast NSW), Brendan Leckie (Gold Coast), Brett Burcher (Mollymook/South Coast NSW) and Blake Wilson (Sunshine Coast).
With good waves forecast right through the weekend the scene is set for intense surfing from the stars of tomorrow.

Tomorrow the action will begin around 8am at Manly.

The event is proudly supported by Arrive alive.
