2008 SDU Athlete Profiles - Women's Open


Angela Ballard - Australia
Angela Ballard is a duel Paralympian having represented Australia at the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Paralympic Games.

She is the Bronze medallist in the T53 100m event from Athens and is a Commonwealth Games representative at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Angie is the Gold medallist in the 100m from the 2002 IPC World Championships and is a member of the World Record holding Australian Women's relay team who currently hold the World Records in the 4x100m and 4x400m Relays.

Angie has raced in many Arrive alive Oz Day 10K's over the years and hopes to be on the podium again in 08.

Angie is now coached by one of the sports all time greats Louise Sauvage. Angie was the victim of a motor vehicle accident when she was 7 years of age and is now and full time student at Sydney University, Board member of WS NSW and serious contender in the T53 class at the Beijing Paralympics.

Christie Dawes - Australia
Christie Dawes has represented Australia at the 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Paralympic Games.

Christie is also an Australian Commonwealth Games representative who competed at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

She is member of the World Record holding Australian Women's relay team who currently hold the World Records in the 4x100m and 4x400m Relays.

Christie is coached by the National Wheelchair Track and Road Coach Andrew Dawes, who also happens to be her husband. Christie survived a motor vehicle accident in 1990, at 10 years of age and is training toward representing Australia at her fourth Paralympics in Beijing 08.

Chantal Petitclerc - Canada
Recognised as the current 'Queen of the Track' Chantal holds World Records in the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m distances.

At the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games she won Gold medals in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m events.

Chantal was named 2005 World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability and has been honoured in her home country with the prestigious title of Canadian of the Year.

She was the first female track racer to win Gold at the Commonwealth Games after the 800m Women's Wheelchair Event was recognised as full medal status. She won Commonwealth Gold in 2002 and 2006.

An accident at 13 left Chantal without the use of her legs but at 18 was already on her way to the heights of the international renown that she experiences today. Chantal will retire after the 2008 Beijing Paralympics and as such this will be the last chance for Sydney crowds to watch her battle for the Arrive alive Oz Day 10K title.
