Arrive alive Cup Update - 04 September 2008

Last Friday the Sydney Football Stadium played host to the Arrive alive Cup Quarter Final match between two evenly matched sides in this years competition, Hunter Sports High and Patrician Brothers' Blacktown. The game was a tight & physical encounter that went down to the final minutes of the contest before Hunter Sports held on to record a 14-12 victory over Patrician Brothers'. Hunter Sports now play 2007 champions and competition favourites Matraville Sports High in the Arrive alive Cup semi-finals this Friday 5th September at the Sydney Football Stadium, a curtain raiser to the much anticipated Roosters versus Dragons NRL clash.

The match started with a flurry of points with both sides hungry to gain the early ascendancy. It was Patrician Brothers' that posted first points through a well timed high kick for Ulise Fahina. The big centre was too strong through the air and came down with the ball to score the first of his two tries. However it was a Patrician Brothers' error from the restart that handed Hunter Sports a great opportunity to answer back with points of their own. Hunter Sports' centre Peter Mata'utia (pictured right) capitalised on this chance by scoring an easy solo try down the right hand edge.

The momentum swung again soon after when Patrician Brothers' hit back with their second try of the afternoon. It was halfback Albert Kelly's vision and perfectly weighted grubber kick behind the Hunter defensive line that allowed Matthew Wright to score the easiest of tries. It was then Hunter's turn to strike back, and after a penalty provided them with strong field position, it was five eight Ethan Cook who capitalised as he beat a number of tacklers to dive over for the fourth try of the match and lock the scores up at 8-8.

Hunter Sports were on the attack once more and it was Cook's vision to run the ball on the last tackle that created problems for the Patrician Brothers' defence. It appeared that Hunter had bombed a certain try until Mata'utia showed great skill to gather in a low pass behind him and then have the ability to reach out with one hand and place the ball over the try line. Mata'utia has been sensational thus far in the Arrive alive Cup for 2008 and certainly is a player to watch for the future. It was a Hunter error from the ensuing kick off that saw Patrician Brothers' in great attacking field position. It was then a strong effort from Fahina to crash over in the left hand corner that saw Patrician Brothers' hit back. The sides went into the break with Hunter holding a slight 14-12 advantage.

The second half reached no great heights on the scoreboard however it proved to be a tough physical battle. Both sides defence was impressive as neither school could find the try line in the second half. Hunter looked likely to extend their lead after receiving a wealth of possession, however the Pats defensive line held firm. It was Patrician Brothers' who then had all the possession but again the Hunter defense repelled the attack. Pats five eight and Man of the Match Albert Kelly looked dangerous in attack and a chip kick late in the game almost broke the deadlock, however it was not to be. Hunter Sports held on to grind out a gutsy 14-12 victory.

Hunter now meet competition powerhouse Matraville Sports High for a chance to take a place in the 2008 Arrive alive Cup Grand Final, played on Friday 26th September. The match is certainly going to be an entertaining clash of two very talented Rugby League schools.

In the other semi final scheduled for next Friday 12th September, Illawarra Sports High School will play the winner of tonights Queensland Final. Palm Beach Currumbin will meet Kirwan State High School at Kougari Oval, Wynnum from 6:30pm.
